Abstract

Contemporary dance has become an increasingly interesting subject in this modern era. However, many people still do not understand that contemporary dance can function as an affective stimulus and is closely related to psychology. The purpose of this article is to examine and analyze the role of contemporary dance as an affective stimulus by exploring the relationship between art, psychology, and psychoanalysis. This study uses a qualitative approach method through critical analysis. The results show that contemporary dance is not only considered a form of artistic expression that focuses on freedom in the creation and exploration of movement, but also serves as a medium and a means to express deep emotions as well as reflect on human psychological dynamics. From a psychoanalytic perspective, dance is considered a process of sublimation and emotional therapy that can bridge the gap between unconscious impulses and human physical expression. In this case, the dancer's body acts as a container for the representation of inner conflict, traumatic experiences, and the process of self-healing, which is expressed through the symbolism of movement, space, and intensity of expression. Through the creative process of contemporary dance creation, dancers and choreographers can pour their expressions and emotions into the movement and then channel it to the audience. From a pedagogical perspective, an understanding of the artistic and psychological dimensions of contemporary dance can encourage educators to develop learning strategies that integrate technical, affective, and aesthetic aspects in a balanced manner, so that they can understand dance as a medium of affective communication, self-exploration, and profound personal transformation.
